22.9.08 Misturinha 221 with Orouni
Jenner: Somehow the songs with acoustic guitars became more popular nowadays, I got very surprised when I saw my 11 y.o. nephew playing Johnny Cash and the biggest brazilian breakthru artist in 2008 is Mallu Magalhães (a 16 y.o. girl)Orouni: I think there has been some folk music around for a long time and I don't think it has ever disapeared, even for a moment. To me, the fact that it's more popular nowadays is just an artifact. It seems that people discover it as if it had been created at the beginning of this century. A bit like ukulele or things that become fashionable but that have existed for ages. Maybe it's due to MySpace and the possibility of putting your work online even if you only have an acoustic guitar, a microphone, a computer and an Internet connection. But I guess that due to MySpace you also have more exposure for metal bands, emo bands, etc. However, I agree with what you say when you mention the canção concept. Even when arrangements are terrible, a song can be good due to its composition. That's when it's fun to cover it with arrangements that you think are more appropriate. Many songs from the eighties are actually good... Jenner: Listenning to Air Hostess On A Mission (new track !) we can feel a brief vibe of bossanova - am I trippin ? Does it have any influence on your work ? Orouni: Among my influences, I could mention The New Pornographers, (Please) Don't Blame Mexico, Leonard Cohen, The Kinks... and also bossa nova on Air Hostess On A Mission, as you say. I have been into Brazilian music for a while but I hadn't really integrated it into my music. I did it for this album, on this song as well as on The Tyrant's Yoke, a little bit. But I'm not really into "classical" bossa such as João Gilberto (though I'm totally amazed by its complexity). I'm more into Tropicália (Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Os Mutantes...), I like the idea of mixing Brazilian influences with other stuff. Jenner: What is "Jump Out The Window" all about ? Orouni: Well, definitely, Jump Out The Window is not about looking for the small things in life. My previous album "A Matter Of Scale" partly was. But this one is really pessimistic. You jump out of your window because you have way too much work as an employee, it's too hard to bear and you think it's the only solution. Same thing when policemen come to get you and you're so scared that you don't know what to do except this. It's something people did a lot in France last year. It's a reaction to extreme pressure. Jenner: The Perfume Conspiracy (feat Mina Tindle) is definetly my favourite song and Mina is singing so beutifully - tell us more about her and Mlie and the process of composing and recording Orouni: Mina Tindle is a very talented person and the world will soon know because she's releasing an EP before the end of the year. People always talk about her voice. So first, yes, I think she has an incredible voice, as well as great musical sense (finding harmonies and backing vocals seems so easy to her). But also, she's a great composer. Songs such as To Carry Many Small Things or Lovely Day are really great 'canções'. As for our collaboration, I had written and recorded this song (The Perfume Conspiracy) on my own for my first album and one day David (of Toy Fight/The Limes/Les Indes Noires) suggested that Mina and I work together, so we started working on this one. We had to transpose it for her voice, and in the beginning the melody was more or less the same as on the piano/voice version, but then one day we played it live and Mina came up with a totally different melody, which was awesome, so we kept it for the "studio" version. As far as Mlie is concerned, it's a bit different because I knew her before we sang together. I'm really happy of what we did for the four songs on Jump Out The Window. I think our voices go perfectly together. On Deezer, a French streaming website, some comments say that I'm a terrible singer, but when I'm singing with Mlie, it's really good, so... Besides, Mlie was also involved in the creative process, for instance she suggested this weird thing we do on the bridge of A Greased & Golden Palm, where you have several voices at the same time, just before the last chorus. I'm especially happy about Stomach Attack, it's the last song we recorded together for this album, and I wanted her voice to be heard without mine, that's what we did this kind of duet. Jenner: List of 5 things really important to be aware in 2008 Orouni: 01. U.S.A. are going to have a new president 02. France won't before two and a half years 03.
